Job Description
Verisk is seeking an atmospheric scientist with scientific programming skills to join our Weather Solutions division based in Lexington, MA. Working remote may also be considered for this position. This growing team is responsible for developing and maintaining products and services that aid clients in the insurance, restoration, and related industries in effectively responding to natural catastrophe events.
A successful candidate will have experience in the field of atmospheric science or a comparable background. Knowledge of severe weather events is desired. Experience in at least one of the following areas is highly desired: weather radar, weather modeling, hurricane, or data assimilation. A strong scientific coding background is required. The candidate should be self-motivated with the ability to work in a collaborative team setting. The candidate will interact closely with scientists, product managers, and software and development engineers and must be comfortable interfacing with these different roles.
Qualifications
- BS with a minimum of two years of related work experience or an advanced degree (MS or PhD)
- At least 2 years scientific research experience or similar in an academic or commercial setting
- Direct experience working with meteorological observational data (remote or in situ sensing such as weather radar, satellite, surface observations, etc.)
- Familiarity working with large dataset
- Demonstrated experience in software development of scientific, geospatial, or engineering algorithms
- Proficient in scientific programming, Python or C++ preferred
- Competency in Linux/UNIX, shell scripting
Additional Skills of Interest
- Familiarity with cloud computing environments
- Experience working with or developing open-source software packages
- Experience using software version control systems (git, GitLab, GitHub, etc.)
