5 Easy Steps to become a Lafayette Lifeguard!
1. Interview/Practice Swim Test
2. Complete the Online Lifeguarding Class (7hrs)
3. Complete the 2 day in-person Lifeguard Class (16hrs)
4. Complete hiring paperwork and first shift orientation!
5. Begin work as a Certified Lifeguard for the City of Lafayette!
Applicants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of the Lifeguarding Course
Non-Certified applicants will be enrolled in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program for FREE. Upon successful completion, applicants will receive the Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
Applicants must first pass a swim test before being enrolled in training. The skills required to pass the class are as follows:
– Swim 300 yards (6 laps) continuously, with breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may not swim on your side or back. Goggles are allowed.
– Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.
– Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Goggles are not allowed.
o Starting in the water, swim 20 yards towards the deep end of the pool
o Surface dive, feet first or headfirst, to a depth of 7-10ft to retrieve a 10lb object
o Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point. Both hands must remain on the object.
o Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

Class Option 1: – Day 1: February 19th, 8:00am – 5:00pm – Day 2: February 20th, 8:00am – 5:00pm *Takes place at the Bob Burger Recreation Center
Class Option 2: – Day 1: February 26th, 8:00am – 5:00pm – Day 2: February 27th, 8:00am – 5:00pm *Takes place at the Bob Burger Recreation Center
Class Option 3: – Day 1: March 12th, 8:00am – 5:00pm – Day 2: March 13th, 8:00am – 5:00pm *Takes place at the Bob Burger Recreation Center
Class Option 4: – Day 1: March 26th, 8:00am – 5:00pm – Day 2: March 27th, 8:00am – 5:00pm *Takes place at the Bob Burger Recreation Center
Essential Functions
- Continuously scan pools for patrons in distress.
- Enforce all rules and policies, clean and maintain facility.
- Perform rescues and administer First Aid according to standards as needed.
- Respond quickly to emergencies.
- Act as problem solver.
- Enforce all City policies, pool rules, and regulations involving the operation of the pool.
- Set a good example for all aquatic employees in conduct, dress and manners.
- Conduct routine safety checks of equipment and staff.
- Ensure all paperwork, i.e., course records, accident reports, etc., are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Attend and participate in scheduled meetings and bi-monthly in-service trainings as required.
- Perform related work as required and assigned by Head Lifeguard.
Expected salary: $15 – 16.25 per hour
