Job description: Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for answering 911 emergency calls and assisting citizens in obtaining emergency services. Work involves the operation of telephone equipment and computer terminals in the Police Department. Working conditions are primarily in an office
environment. Exercises no supervision.
WORK LOCATION: May be required to report to any of the following work locations based on business need:
- 315 S. Santa Rosa (Public Safety Headquarters)
- 8039 Challenger Drive (Public Safety Answering Point)
- 4700 Quarry Run (Regional Operations Center)
Essential Job Functions
- Answers the 911 universal emergency telephone number in the Police Department.
- Determines the nature of the emergency, enters necessary information into the computer system and routes the data to the Police Dispatchers.
- Routes emergency telephone calls to the proper governmental agency.
- Assists Police Officers in obtaining services.
- Determines classification of service request and jurisdiction.
- Maintains a calm response to all emergency situations.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.
- One year of experience in public contact either in person or by telephone.
- Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, applicant must not have any of the following:
- Felony Convictions
- Felony Deferred Adjudication
- Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication
- Class B Misdemeanor Convictions
- Any Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor)
- Any Family Violence Convictions
- Must obtain TCOLE Telecommunicator Certification within one (1) year of employment.
- Must obtain TCIC/NCIC, Full Access Certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Must meet the minimum requirements established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement for Telecommunicators.
State mandated eligibility for this position requires the applicant:
- Is a United States citizen.
- Possess an Honorable discharge from branch of Military in which applicant served, if applicable.
- Must not have a Conviction of a Class B Misdemeanor in the last ten years or any conviction of a higher offense.
- Must not have a conviction of family violence as it is an automatic disqualifier.
- Submit to a background investigation as required by state law.
- Provide truthful and accurate information at all times during the application process. Any dishonesty found during the application process will result in an automatic

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One (1) year experience as an Emergency Services Dispatcher and/or 911 Call Taker, or One (1) year of experience in a high call volume contact center.
- Ability to type 35 words per minute.

- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
- Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
